Read moreAs a Bandera Democrat, I want to thank the gentleman who took the time and effort to remove red paint from the TXDOT sign designating a stretch of road cleaned periodically by the Bandera Democratic Party. No matter his motivation, it was an act of decency performed by a member of an opposition political party. It reminded many of us that we may disagree on issues, but we are all members of this county and can work together for the common good. In that regard, the coat drive recently conducted by different groups in this county, including the Democratic and Republican Parties, also serves as a positive model. Those who will be warmer this week as the chill sets in, probably could care less if they are wearing a Democrat or Republican coat….the reality is it’s a warm coat. That is the good in my title.

But not according to Attorney General Ken Paxton, the 87th Texas Legislature, Texas Election Code 273.021,and the 1951 Texas General Laws 1097,1152, and fourteen state senators filing an amicus brief. In regard to the letter to the Editor that was published on or about January 12, 2022, where that author described “an anonymous and cowardly action and not very neighborly” criminal mischief. For those that did not read the article where someone used red paint and spray painted over the word DEMOCRATICS on the erected public property sign.

I would like to talk about Axl, a border collie. He was my friend. More than that, he was caretaker. He used to recognize my sleep apnea was getting too bad. He would bark until I woke. As a couple of bachelors, for many years we grew to rely on one another’s presence. I would calm him through the thunderstorms and distant gun shots. He would be the happiest thing to greet me after a trying day at work.
