DENNIS DUER
Dennis Duer, 74, of Tarpley, Texas, passed away on Jan. 21, 2022. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri to Joseph and Carolyn Duer on Nov. 1, 1947. He graduated from Central Missouri State University. He was appointed to the Kansas City Police Department in 1971. His assignments included Central Patrol Division and North Patrol Division where he was assigned at the time of his retirement. Retired Police Officer Duer was reappointed as a Reserve Police Officer from November 2001 through March 2004.
Following retirement, Dennis moved to Rio Hondo Ranch, Tarpley, Texas. He said he came to Texas to look around and found “the valley” and fell in love with it. Dennis bought property “Double D’s Ranch” with wonderful oaks and had friends come out and hunt. After a few years, Dennis gave up hunting because, as he said, “I’d hate to dress out a doe and find that I had shot her, and she was pregnant.”
After settling into Rio Hondo, Dennis got involved with the property owner’s association. His office was Vice President for Special Projects. Dennis had quite the green thumb. He got into haybale gardening, something many of his neighbors had never heard of. His garden produced an abundance and after a while neighbors would joke that they would hide when they saw Dennis coming because he’d given them more than they could use. Dennis was also quite the cook. He made great spaghetti gravy which he gladly shared with neighbors. But his best culinary delight was his yeast rolls. Every Thanksgiving, Dennis was charged with bringing two dozen yeast rolls to dinner; he always brought three dozen.
Dennis loved his animals: dogs, cat, chickens, deer, and a guinea fowl (which he called a chicken) and his hummingbirds. The two dogs he had while in Rio Hondo were his best friends. Both were rescue dogs-Rosie and Sophie.
He always spoke highly of his family and how proud he was of his son Chris.
Dennis was preceded in death by father, mother, and youngest son Kyle Duer.
Survivors include: his son Chris, (Stephanie) Duer; brothers Joseph Duer and Jeff Duer; sister Susan Thilking; stepmother Ann Duer; and Chris’s mother Beverly Duer.
