Lady Bulldogs lose to Davenport
The Bandera Lady Bulldogs fell in play at home to the Davenport Lady Wolves three games to zero. The Lady Bulldogs took the court without one of their seniors, Stella Brown, who rolled her ankle during the Boerne match last week. Brown looks to be out for the rest of the season due to the seriousness of the injury.
The Lady Bulldogs looked tentative in Game One against the Lady Wolves. Davenport took an early lead and Bandera struggled to catch up. Maci Morrison began with a very sound strategy of pounding spikes from the net. Shaely Rogers blasted a significant spike from the back court. Summer Haby held the back court by steadily returning serves to set up play at the net. The Lady Bulldogs’ younger players were enthusiastic and showed some real hustle on the court.
Maci Morrison showed off her serving, setting, and spiking talent in this game. She should be renamed “the Post Office” because she delivers no matter what. Her spiking and setting were superior throughout the match. The technique she showed was indicative of upper tier play. By the end of the game, the Lady Bulldogs had found their feet and were beginning to show some awesome team play. Unfortunately, the Bandera could not recover from their early deficit and lost the game 17 to Davenport’s 25.
During Game Two, Bandera and Davenport kept the scores up neck and neck. The Bandera team shifted from power spiking to soft touch dinks over the net. The Lady Wolves kept the ball in play throughout. Taylor Hamilton showed her great potential with a power spike on the Lady Wolves. The Bulldogs led 16 to Davenport 14 at the midpoint. Rogers called up another power spike to crush the Lady Wolves. She and Maci Morrison created a hard wall at the net blocking several Davenport spikes. Jayla Blake made a great strategic spike during the last half of the game. The Lady Bulldogs led throughout the game, but Davenport came from behind to win 25 to Bandera’s 19.
The Third Game of the Match went into overtime. The Lady Bulldogs came out with gritted teeth and blood in their eyes. It was easy to see that they wanted the victory very badly. Their never say die attitude was evident as they buckled down and matched Davenport on every play. The team began to move as one and played top notch ball. They finally were able to cover Davenport’s spikes and showed how they could work together. By the end of the game, Davenport caught fire and brought the score up to 24 to 24. The game went into overtime but a last error in play cost the Bulldogs the final points of the game with Davenport scoring 27 to Bandera’s 25. On Friday, October 22, the Lady Bulldogs will travel to Canyon Lake to play the Lady Hawks. The Bulldogs returned to end district play at home on Tuesday, October 26 playing perennial rival Fredericksburg. No scores were available at press time.
