A hungry crowd numbering around 400 came together on a clear, cool Sunday afternoon to feast on fried fish, fries, coleslaw, cornbread, beans and dessert at The Medina Volunteer Fire Department’s annual community fish fry on May 16 at the Firehouse in Medina.

The fish fry is one of the Fire Department’s two major fundraisers and is a long-standing tradition in the community.

The ladies of Medina provided baked goods for dessert, while volunteers with the department cooked up the meal.

The dinner was a sitdown affair situated on picnic tables in the fire house.

Students from the Medina High School National Honor Society manned the food service line to serve the patrons.

While the crowd ate, the Caliche Hill Band of Utopia provided music for the event.

MVFD President Lee Bailey remarked, “We had a drive through last year, but everybody is ready to get out and sit down with their neighbors to do something more normal this year.”

Bailey said the money earned from the fish fry will be used on the fire department’s operating expenses like fuel for the trucks, maintenance on the equipment and training for the firefighters and EMTs.

The all-volunteer department has 5 EMT’s and 28 fire fighters.

The department’s other fundraiser, the wildly popular 2020 Raffle, sold out in April, and the weekly drawings kicked off on April 26 with a $1,500 gift certificate to the La Cantera Resort.
