Angel program brings children joy
The St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Stanislaus’ Catholic Church brought Christmas happiness to underprivileged families in Bandera County. Forty-eight children in Bandera and twenty children in Lakehills will get a Christmas full of joy this year thanks to the Angel Tree Project sponsored by the Society.
Parishioners were asked to select an angel from the tree and purchase toys and other essentials for that child. Bandera Electric Coop donated turkeys and the Society purchased the non-perishable sides for a Christmas dinner for the families. Parents could pick up the toys and food on Tuesday, December 14.
Past President Teresa Helbert explained that the group comes together to help the indigent citizens in the community with food assistance, and when necessary, rent, medicine and utility assistance. The Vincentians are united as an international society which embraces the ideas of charity and justice. They meet twice a month at the church.
The Society also provides educational programs which teach personal budgeting and resume writing said President Bob Bashaw. Bashaw said that the Society participates in Angel Tree annually to bring gifts and a Christmas dinner to needy families.
A food pantry run by the St. Vincent de Paul Society is open each Thursday from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the church hall to provide weekly help to those in need.
Angel Tree Chairman Marilyn Falvey said “I think it went well this year as far as presents. Our parishioners were very generous, and the presents were large. Bandera Electric Coop was an unexpected partner this year by donating turkeys for Christmas dinner. This project really brought forth the spirit of Christmas.”
