County recognizes neurofibromatosis awareness month
The Bandera County Commissioners unanimously passed a resolution recognizing May as neurofibromatosis (NF) awareness month.
The resolution was passed in recognition of May 17 as World Awareness Day.
Affecting more than 3,000 people worldwide, NF is the most common neurological disorder caused by a single gene, and it is more prevalent that cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy combined.
NF involves the uncontrolled growth of tumors along nerves and is linked to learning disabilities, high blood pressure, epilepsy and can affect the development of the brain, cardiovascular system, bones and skin.
NF has a wide array of potential effects, including deafness, deformity, blindness, cancer and death.
The county’s resolution also recognized the Texas Neurofibromatosis Found and its mission to eet needs of people impacted by NF by providing comfort, support, education, advocacy and funding for treatment, prevention or cure.
