The Lakehills Community Center hosted a Pre-Election Community Meeting on the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 1, to provide local candidates an opportunity to speak directly to their constituents.

Fifty-five people showed up to hear the two-and-a-half hour presentation and to visit the organizations at tables set up in the back.

Senator Pete Flores spoke about his experiences this year in Austin since his election and gave a brief presentation on the 14 propositions on the ballot.

Flores explained what areas each proposition impacted and gave a historical perspective on their creation.

Bandera City Council candidates Debbie Breen, Cindy Coffey and Manny Longoria spoke about their platforms and answered questions from the audience.

Candidates Tony Battle and Brett Hicks sent in statements, which moderator Kelly Beadle read to the audience.

BISD Board Trustee candidates Casey Hauer and Roger Byrd sent in statements which Beadle also read to the audience.

BISD Bond Committee Co-Chair Ron Gherman, Superintendent Gary Bitzkie, and CFO Mike Neumann presented key elements of the bond proposal to the audience and outlined facts about the process.

Gherman, Bitzkie and Neumann took questions from the audience about the bond.

Several community organizations were present at tables to hand out information and speak to voters.

The BISD Bond Committee, Bandera County Retired Teachers, Bandera Democratic Club, the Bandera Republican Party, and a voter registration table were available to answer questions about their issues on the ballot.

The last day to register to vote is Oct. 10. Early voting will be Oct. 23 to Nov. 3. Election Day is Nov. 7.
