In his 82 years, Robert Gene Hagerty was the architect of a life well-lived.

Born the eldest son of Wilford Eugene Hagerty and Jyrldeene Beatrice Benedict Hagerty in Dallas, Texas, Robert was raised with his sisters Patricia Ann Gifford and Beverly Vinita Hagerty in Fort Worth.

After graduating from Tech High School in Fort Worth, Robert enlisted in the Army, serving three years in Germany in the 3rd Armor Division.

While enlisted, Robert married longtime sweetheart Shirley Camille Trebing in 1955, having met in the fifth grade. In 1957, while serving in Frankfurt, Germany, their son Paul Gene was born.

After an honorable discharge, the family moved to Lubbock, where Robert studied architecture at Texas Tech University and their two daughters Lisa Marie and Carole Lynne were born.

After earning his degree, the family moved to Corpus Christi, where he worked as an architect for Page Southerland Page for 15 years.

Robert was an active member of the Baptist church and served as scout master of Boy Scout Troop #178 for many years.

In 1982, Robert began two decades of work as vice president of construction services at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlin-gen, where his architectural expertise helped improve the care for tens of thousands of patients.

After retiring in 2002, Robert and Shirley moved to Pipe Creek, where he designed and oversaw the construction of their dream home, itself a testament to his careful craftsmanship.

Robert’s love of building, organization and all things mechanical kept his sharp mind on the move.

After a long retirement of collecting books, antiques and building model tanks in the Hill Country while enjoying the company of Shirley and a home always full of family, Robert passed on Dec. 30, 2019.

He is survived by his loving wife Shirley, son Paul and wife Kim Province, daughters Lisa Stewart and Carole Gill, their children, Meghan Hagerty Claridge (Stuart), Robyn Mertz Lacroix (Justin), Hunter Mertz (Carrie), Sarah Stewart Byarlay (Colby), Kyle Hagerty, Kory Stewart (Khadeja), six great-grandchildren, sisters Patricia and Beverly, and many nieces and nephews.

Shirley and the family extend a special thank you to the staff at Alamo Hospice.
